Flint, Genesee County seat and birthplace of General Motors, lies between Greater Detroit to the south and recreational attractions of Michigan's "thumb" to the north. Founded as a trading post by settlers along the Flint River, Flint's "Vehicle City" status can be traced to William Durant's first carriage factory attaining sufficient success to invest in a new company called Buick. Later it was able to assist Louis Chevrolet in mass production of his automobile that led to advent of General Motors. Flint's Alfred P. Sloan Museum now showcases the world's largest collection of bumper-to-bumper Buick memorabilia. Yet all is not about cars in Flint, where cultural attractions range from the Flint Institute of the Arts and the Flint Symphony Orchestra to the Longway Planetarium, Michigan's largest, with 282 seats under a 60-foot dome for events including laser light shows. Sports Creek Raceway, near downtown, offers live harness horse racing from September through mid-February. Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad, a living replica of an 1800s village, leads back to simpler times with a 1910 Ferris wheel and a 1912 carousel. The Genesee Belle, a paddlewheel riverboat, cruises Mott Lake, where the man-made Stepping Stone Falls cascades at the foot of the lake across from Crossroads Village. The Heavenly Scent Herb Farm features seven theme gardens, greenhouses, and unusual shop items, and the Mott Children's Hashbarger Farm is a working farm attracting families hoping to connect with rural heritage. Lodging accommodations include bed and breakfasts along with assorted name brand motels and hotels.
